It contains 379 stairs and the base diameter is 14.3 metres and it narrows to 2.7 metres at the last storey. The Construction was begun by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1192 and was completed by Iltutmish. It houses the Chandra Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum. Jan tar Mantar this is the largest and the best preserved of the five observatories built by Jai Singh II in different parts of the country.
